The Tenth Circle
By Jodi Picoult

"Daddy, he raped me." -Trixie Stone
“Picoult spins fast-paced tales of family dysfunction, betrayal, and redemption… (her) depiction of of these rites of contemporary adolescence is exceptional: unflinching, unjudgmental, utterly chilling. ”
—The Washington Post

"I don't think this kid killed himself by jumping off a bridge, I think he was pushed."- detective
“Picoult takes two hard-hitting subjects - rape and murder - and pulls them apart with such intelligence and insight that you'll never see them as clear-cut issues again. Tender, compelling and brilliant.”
—EVE Magazine, United Kingdom

"She's gone...I don't know where she is, and I don't know when she left." -Daniel Stone
“[This] novel's twists and suspense will satisfy the most adrenaline-addicted reader…Picoult must have set her keyboard on fire as she wrote. The energy and tumble-down acceleration is extraordinary.”
—Midwest Book Review

"I don't think either of us was going to let her go to jail." Daniel said. "She won't be, because I killed Jason."- Laura Stone

“Some of Picoult's best storytelling distinguishes her twisting, metaphor-rich 13th novel (after Vanishing Acts) about parental vigilance gone haywire, inner demons and the emotional risks of relationships …This story of a flawed family on the brink of destruction grips from start to finish.”
—Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

Why I Chose The Items I Chose:

Quote One: "Daddy, he raped me." This is a huge part of the book, and the first step to the rising action. Without these four words, Jason would still be alive, she never would have run away to Alaska, and her mother wouldn't have been arrested. This quote shows how scared and worried Trixie was when she came home from the party. When everybody in the town found out about this quote, they all thought she was lying. The first real conflict in this book, was the rape.Quote Two: "I don't think this kid killed himself by jumping off a bridge, I think he was pushed." When the detective spoke these words, a crime scene of a suicide was changed into a crime scene for a murder. This is another main part of the rising action. When the detective said this, I instantly thought that Trixie or Daniel murdered Jason. As a reader, I could feel the intensity that was going on in the book. I felt as though I was there when these words were spoken. Quote Three: "She's gone...I don't know where she is, and I don't know when she left." I chose this quote, because not only is it a part of the rising action, but that it directly shows the love and worry, Daniel had towards Trixie. This quote also makes Trixie seem more and more guilty of murder. This quote especially seems realistic because it shows nothing more than the love a parent has for their child. Daniel's actions after saying this, show that he wanted to protect Trixie more than anything. At this point, we readers didn't know where Trixie was going, or if she was even still alive.Quote Four: "I don't think either of us was going to let her go to jail."Daniel said,"She won't be, because I killed Jason." This quote is the climax of the story. It is also kind of the resolution. The quote shows that Trixie really was innocent, and that Laura is the real murderer. The part where it says "I don't think either of us was going to let her go to jail," shows that even though the Stone family had some problems, that their still a caring family.Video One: This video from Jodi Picoults website, gives a summary of the book. The summary was more in the view of the comic book, rather than just the book. This video pursuades readers, and gives them enough information to make them interested about the book. I like how the video shows how Daniel will change throughout the book. Video Two: This video is a trailer for the movie that recently came out. The preview really shows how Daniel cares for Trixie. The preview does a nice job of showing how disfunctional the Stone's really are. I like how it reals the audience into the video, and makes you feel as if you are in the same room. The people who made this movie seem to have done a good job of bringing the Stone family into life.
